2006 Malbec
Gapsted Limited Release 2006 Malbec
Vineyard Region: Alpine Valley
Winemaking
Fermented in small stainless steel tanks with pumping over 3 times a day and two rack and return operations. We used a Bordeaux isolate yeast and a lot of air to encourage a healthy ferment. The wine was transferred to mostly older French and American barrels to finish malolactic fermentation. After racking, clarifying and returning to barrel for 18 months, it was bottled in June 2009 under screw cap.
Colour: Deep inky red
Nose: Rich chocolaty cherry-like Black-forest aromas followed by a spicy vanilla oak.
Palate: Soft and plummy fruit fills out the palate, followed by rich mouth filling tannins and plenty of plummy weight finish and flavour that is unique to Malbec.
Wine Analysis: Alc/Vol 14.0%
Peak Drinking: Now-2014
Food Matches: Savour a glass with Grilled Porterhouse topped with Baked Field Mushrooms.
Last Word
We don't do Malbec very often, Not many wineries in Australia do. When we do though, we're proud of it. As Malbec has intense colour, it is traditionally reserved for blending with Cabernet, and it is especially needed in cool years when the colour of Cabernet can be light. Blending small amounts with Merlot, can also give Merlot a lovely backbone and support it's length. It is best when the crops are kept low and the wine is dark and earthy. This 2006 is made from 26 year old vines, and the colour is inky and the abundant fruit will enable it to last for many years. It will cellar for 10 years or more.
